Why don’t these colors mix? This layered water experiment shows the surprising physics of salt water density. By dissolving different amounts of salt into water, each layer has a different density, allowing colored water to stack on top of each other without mixing. It looks almost impossible, but it’s a classic chemistry and physics experiment that demonstrates how density gradients work in fluids.
This simple science experiment is similar to how layering happens in the ocean, where water of different salinity, temperature, and density forms stable layers that can stay separated for long periods of time.
