Don’t try this experiment at home. In this chemistry demonstration, I explore the fascinating reaction between calcium metal (Ca) and water (H₂O) — revealing how alkaline earth metals behave when exposed to moisture. As calcium turnings are added to water in one beaker, we observe bubbling, hydrogen gas release, and a rise in pH. A few drops of phenolphthalein indicator turn the solution pink, showing the formation of calcium hydroxide, a strong base.
In a second beaker, vinegar (acetic acid) is used to neutralize the base, illustrating the difference in reaction rate and acidity. To finish, adding a small amount of soap traps the hydrogen gas in bubbles — and when ignited, these bubbles burst into tiny pops of flame, demonstrating the flammability of hydrogen and the energy released during metal–water reactions.
This experiment beautifully shows the reactivity of calcium, the production of hydrogen gas, and the visual indicators of chemical change — all key concepts in basic chemistry and reaction kinetics.
